On Saturday the 5th October at the Croydon Conference Centre the Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) and the Croydon Mentoring Consortium will be hosting ‘Simply the best: Inspiring Black Boys to Succeed’, a one day conference for black boys aged 10 to 16.

The Black Training and Enterprise Group, a leading ethnic minority charity, has published a leaflet to assist parents/guardians of school age children when they are meeting with the school to stop racism and/or bullying.

The three page leaflet entitled, ‘DEALING WITH RACISM AND BULLYING: Make sure you are prepared when you meet the Head Teacher’ contains 11 practical tips and useful website links for parents.

Leading charity urges employment minister to lead attack on ethnic minority unemployment

The Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion (CESI) and the Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) hosted a national conference on the 4th February at Central Hall, Westminster on ‘How do we increase ethnic minority employment?' The conference was attended by 100 individuals and organisations from the private, public and voluntary sectors and was sponsored by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

The Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) have been awarded a lottery grant (£362k) for its Routes2Success Community Role Model Programme.

The grant will be used to recruit a volunteer force of successful black male role models to participate in activities across England aimed at inspiring young black males (11-25 yrs) to reach their full potential in learning, employment and self-employment.

The Routes2Success programme hopes to help improve the following statistics:

New ex-offender led programme to reduce offending

A leading black charity believes it is vital that black ex-offenders play a greater role in reducing crime especially amongst young males. The Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) was approached by Trevor Hercules, a former offender, who has spent over ten years since leaving prison, working with schools to prevent young males entering the criminal justice system.

Better communication between black parents and their children could improve educational results and life chances

Black parents on a new Parent in Partnership programme found that by developing better communication skills they could have a greater impact on their children, according to a report published by the Black Training and Enterprise Group today.

The parenting programme was developed jointly by 100 Black Men of London and BTEG. As the idea of a big society develops it is clear that the ‘family unit’ should be more than just mother and father. In the black community the family needs to include other key and influential and non family members who could also play an enabling role.

London's Ethnic Minority Jobless Figures Soar

Ethnic minorities now make up half of Jobseekers Allowance Claimants in the capital, although they represent less than a third of London's working age population, according to Black Training and Enterprise Group.

Government figures for London show the number of JSA claimants in London from an ethnic minority background was 110,150 in May 2011. This is up from 100,705 in the previous period (January 2011), an increase of 9.4 per cent.
